NIGERIA FLAG: How a Young Nigerian won the design competition in 1958

The national flag of Nigeria is referred to as the Nigeria flag. It has two colors of green and white. It is a national symbol of Nigerian identity. A young Nigerian by the name of Michael Taiwo Akinwunmi won a national competition in 1958 and his design of the Nigeria flag was selected as the best. The winning price was NGN 100,000.00.

According to him” I was lucky to come across the competition in a library. I partook in the competition after taking into cognizance the needs of a country about to experience independence. The prize money then was a lot of money, NGN 100,000.00.”
The green color in the Nigeria flag represents abundance of natural resources while the white represents peace and unity.

Historically, the judges and organizers made adjustments and corrections to Michael’s original design. His original design included a sun shining brightly in the middle of the white background of the flag.
